Artist Statement

Painting landscapes with their changing light and evolving shapes revealing transparent layers of color allows for the transfer of my interior self to the exterior world. Seeking the mystery and excitement in the play of light or quality of color in the random occurrence of beautiful compositions either in nature or by accidental hand has a calming effect, enabling me to find my center and voice with the brush or stroke of pastel the possibilities present in a specific moment. These “transferences” give life to emotions, moods and senses that are inexpressible with words, creating fact and form of abstractions, rendering them facets of objects or places.

The sensual pleasure of dragging a pastel stick across the grainy surface of the paper to build the multiple layers of color and texture draws me into the process of making the painting. Making the sensitive lines and marks that create the images somehow thrills me and brings a sense of complete satisfaction. Painting is my connection to everything else, when I am painting; I am the most me that I can be.
